International Women’s Day Special
International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, has been celebrated on March 8 every year since Sunday, March 8, 1914. It has already been 100 years but the plight of women is still miserable. Here are some facts/quotes-
‘‘Women are half the world’s population, working two-thirds of the world’s working hours, receiving 10% of the world’s income, owning less than 1% of the world’s property.’’[+ ]
♦ More than 530,000 women die in childbirth every year – tragically, the vast majority of these deaths are avoidable with simple and cost-effective health interventions.[+]
♦ More than 100 million women in the developing world, about 17 percent of all married women would prefer to postpone their next pregnancy or not have any more children but are not using a modern method of contraception.[+]
♦ The 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year, of which 80% are female and half are children.[+]
♦ The International Labor Organization estimates that women and girls represent the largest share of forced labor victims with 11.4 million trafficked victims (55%) compared to 9.5 million (45%) men. [+]
♦ Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry (behind illegal drugs and arms trafficking). It reportedly generates a profit of $32 billion every year. Of that number, $15.5 billion is made in industrialized countries. [+]
