Its been snowing for four-five days that makes life harder in the UK. The almighty nature is powerful, no one can change its rule and direction using a power of gun or resolutions however loss can be mitigated by making system disaster resilient. Man can feel safe when entering the house from the snowy days. The coldest moment outside and warmest environment inside make a huge difference in human life. Both temperatures have trade-offs however it should be synchronised as per the need of changing time. House should be designed and utilised without harming the environment. If you invest in your house, you should be protected by now and the future. we can expect an exchange warm and cold in the adverse weather, however, most of the cities are ruined with concrete, iron and bad materials that do not offer pleasant home environment. Basically, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and so on use concrete, iron, soil and other anti-environmental materials to make a home. It cost huge but provides minimum benefits such as heat, cold or fresh air. To be safe and to be protective people need a house. House is a basic need, it should come under the governing principle of international human rights. People must be provided the house.
Let me take an example from Nepal’s housing system. This example could be a similar case in other parts of the world too. In Nepal, a house is made in own land. The material of the housing is cement, concrete, iron, soil, wood, plastic and so on. They are assimilated with poor engineering work and less visionary urban planning. In an urban area, people spend minimum one thousand pounds to make a home just for the materials and labour charges without fitting other basic utilities such as air conditioning. Due to what people even suffer from the house during adverse weather. In winter the hose gets coldest and in summer the house gets warmest. They might feel protective in the rain, but the houses constructed by using materials, afore mentioned, produce dump. This is not good for the health and cost, if houses are constructed just to show a BIG and COLURFUL.
One of the engineers, who was engineering a home, was asked that why they don’t recommend installing an air conditioning system in the house as it cost not more than eight hundred starling pounds whereas people have already invested minimum one hundred thousand starling pounds (equivalent NRs 1,50,00,000) to complete a house construction. In answer, he replied there is no double-glazing door and window system in Nepal. But he agreed with and assured that he was going to raise this issue in their engineer’s meeting so that engineer’s association make a lobby to change the housing system and materials.
On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by a huge Mw 7.8 earthquake. According to the Disaster Report Nepal 2017, total death 9,708; 1 million 85 thousand,7 hundred and 97 houses were damaged from the earthquake so far in Nepal. “A single paragraph describes about a massive earthquake in the Kathmandu Valley in 1255, which may have been a great earthquake because it is alleged to have been followed by three years of aftershocks. Since a Wular lake earthquake in 1250 BC, estimated, (Iyengar, et.al. 1999) Nepal and periphery of Indian continent is not new about the seismic hazardous activities although it had been taken as a curse of misdeed in ancient religious society (Iyengar, et.al. 1999). “A book written by Brahma Shamsher after the earthquake of 1934 suggests ‘to make earthquake safe buildings’. The book mentions proper site selection, quality materials, proper construction, height of the structure, geometrical configuration or plan form, and lightness of the upper storey as key elements.” (DRN, 2011, p117). Considering the facts of humanity and sustainable development, disaster preparedness is an important task of policy makers and the country. But implementation part is very poor. No lesson is learnt from the past experiences.
Housing system is totally rubbish in Nepal including India, Bangladesh and other part of Asia, neither they protect lives from adverse weather nor are they safe in the earthquake. Why the house is made, just for sleeping in the night or to protect from the rain or to promote the human wellbeing! A house should be considered a safe and peaceful zone from noise, pollution, temperature and other kind of adversity. How to get such basic needs from the house at the lowest cost is a serious question to be think ahead !
