Malnutrition Poverty and Data Error

Last two years were my hectic journey of academic life which was so hard however it was paid off. Finally, I achieved my another Master Degree (MSc) in food security and development from the University of Reading, United Kingdom. The strong knowledge of food security has widened my future responsibility in chasing the solution of malnutrition, climate change and food production.

Indeed, malnutrition is one of the top severe global problem. Hunger and obesity both are malnutrition. Hunger is a state of lack of quality and nutritional food and obesity, necessarily does not mean a state of over food consumption rather it is an eating disorder. Hunger used to be a serious problem but now obesity has been added up on the top list of the global problem. According to a  data, the 925 million people are undernourished and 1.5 billion people are obese in the world. Both state of malnutrition are the reason of challenging health problem such as physical disability, underweight, Kwashiorkor and mental disorder caused by lack of nutritional food. Similarly, diabetes, cholesterol, heart attack, cancer and early death caused by eating disorder. Due to the associated problem  with malnutrition, it cost huge in health services. So, food system management should be taken as a serious agenda in the future. Considering the fact, the United Nations has announced a global agenda called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2015 to 2030 to leave no one behind.

The main objectives of the SDGs are to alleviate poverty and ending hunger from the world by 2030. It is an ambiguous agenda following globalism. However, the critiques raise a great concern on the poverty demarcation line of income 1.25 US dollar which is absolutely insufficient in managing day to day cost of poor to afford increasing basic needs. The case is, most of the developing countries which are on the way to industrialisation and urbanisation. Due to what, property price goes up and push income up for the few not many landless. That is not a production based income and neither it increases the income of poor who do not own the property. Hence, according to the critiques, poverty which estimated a massive reduction does not reflect reality, rather it just hides poverty in statistics. Moreover, on the other hand, the US and the UK are the main initiators of the globalism (neo-liberalism) but their recent neo-national approach put global agendas in a difficult situation. So, it is quite early to predict whether SDGs is be funded enough. Similarly, another serious question is whether increasing food benefits agro-economy because they are suffering greatly from managerial and financial shortcomings as well as political instability. They, also, lack essential data to identify challenge and opportunity. And, the global governance is greatly influenced by, according to Professor Paul Collier, “aid, trade, security and governance”. There is a huge chance of manipulation. Since, a huge challenge, the aim of SDGs has brought hope forward to make food available, accessible and sustainable for the well-being of a global population.

According to the critiques, poverty which estimated a massive reduction does not reflect reality, rather it just hides in statistics.

When considering, food system and increasing human population, the natural resource is severely stressed due to human activities. Land is encroached, water is depleted and environment is polluted. The climate has been stressed and posed a serious threats of sudden collapse. The two planetary boundaries have already crossed its limitation among the nine planetary boundaries. It is a serious threats for the future humanity; any time it could collapse if appropriate remedies are not taken seriously. Hence, the challenging issue is how food production is increased by preserving eco-system, and by encroaching them minimum.

There is a way out if the dedication and courage work enough. The safe place we can find if we are committed to get this. The productivity approach takes minimum resource and supports increasing food production; so that, proportion of natural resources or inputs used to produce food will be reduced. Hence, the safe space will be widened that help to preserve environment.

Now onward, it is our responsibility to think about food system how it works, why it is essential to the human life and living creatures, how it negatively affects to the climate change and what happen if nature, the driving force of food production, is ruined by the human activities. There is an alternative to everything but there is no alternatives food that only can be produced in support of natural resources. My conscience says that let’s save eco-system to secure food to save humanity in the future. I will commit to doing something better in the year 2019 for humanity and the food system.
